What these parts actually are

ALi Corporation built its business on the silicon inside televisions and set-top boxes: demux and video decode, display scaling, and the interface glue around a tuner and a panel. The M-series devices are complete systems on a chip with embedded memory controllers, video pipelines and analogue front ends, which is why they appear only in BGA or fine-pitch QFP and never in a catalogue-style package.

The honest sourcing picture

These are not catalogue parts. They were sold to set makers rather than through distribution, they are not listed on standard franchised channels, and the open market supply largely comes from excess production and board pulls. Two consequences follow. First, the suffix after the dash encodes package and revision, and a revision change can require different boot code, so the exact code from the original board is the reference. Second, because the parts cannot be bought new from a distributor, verifying that a device is genuine and functional matters more than price — a re-marked or reballed part will usually fail only after it has been installed and the board has been through reflow.
