Reading the code

The number after the family prefix is the pitch in hundredths of a millimetre: 250 is 2.50 mm and 200 is 2.00 mm. The final digits are the circuit count, so SMW250-04 is a four-way 2.50 mm header and SMAW250-08 is an eight-way. The prefix distinguishes body styles — SM and SMAW are different mounting and orientation variants of the same pitch family — which is why two headers with identical pitch and circuit count can still be the wrong part.

Pitch is the interface, not the footprint

Wire-to-board connectors are chosen as a set with their housing and crimp terminals. A 2.50 mm header needs a 2.50 mm housing, and the housing needs the matching terminal for the wire gauge in use. Substituting 2.00 mm for 2.50 mm to fit a shortage is not a workaround — the pins will not align with the housing cavities, and forcing them spreads the contacts permanently. On the board side, the through-hole and surface-mount versions of the same pitch leave different pad geometry, so a rework substitution changes the assembly process as well as the part.
