Reading a Coilcraft code

XAL4020-222MEC decodes in three parts. XAL is the series — a molded, magnetically shielded power inductor with a low-loss core. 4020 is the mechanical envelope, roughly 4.0 by 4.0 mm with a 2.0 mm height, so 4030 is the taller version of the same footprint and 3530 is 3.5 mm square. 222 is the inductance in microhenry with the third digit as a multiplier, giving 2.2. M is plus or minus twenty percent and the trailing letters are packaging and termination.

The two numbers that decide a substitution

Inductance and footprint are the easy part. Saturation current and DC resistance are what the design actually depends on, and they vary widely between families of the same size: a molded XAL part and a shielded wire-wound part in the same 4 mm footprint can differ by a factor of two in saturation current and by more in DCR. Too low a saturation current and the inductor soft-saturates at load, the current ramps faster than the controller expects, and the supply becomes noisy before it becomes hot. XGL is the lower-loss option where efficiency is the constraint; XAL is the cost-optimised moulded part.
