Decoding the value field

Darfon uses the same compact notation as most Japanese and Korean passive makers, and it is worth reading slowly. R marks the decimal point, so R22 is 0.22 microhenry and R15 is 0.15 microhenry. N marks nano, so 1N2 is 1.2 nanohenry, 3N9 is 3.9 nanohenry and 2N7 is 2.7 nanohenry. Plain three digits are nanohenry directly: 56N is 56 nanohenry, 68N is 68 nanohenry, 39N is 39 nanohenry. The trailing tolerance letter behaves differently above and below 10 nH — S is an absolute tolerance of a fraction of a nanohenry on the smallest values, J is five percent on the larger ones.

Why nH parts are not interchangeable on value alone

In the low nanohenry range the parasitic elements dominate. Two 1.5 nH parts in the same 0402 body can have self-resonant frequencies hundreds of megahertz apart and different Q, because the internal electrode pattern differs between generations. In a matching network, an antenna feed or a filter at 2.4 GHz, that difference is a shift in the band, not a small error. Rated current and DC resistance matter too: these parts sit in bias lines where a few hundred milliamps of DC will already begin to shift the effective inductance.
