Why the TNPW code is worth reading

TNPW040242K7BEED states everything that matters for a precision part: TNPW is the thin-film family, 0402 the case, 42K7 the value written with the multiplier in the letter position, B the tolerance at plus or minus 0.1 percent, and the following letters the temperature coefficient and packaging. A thick-film resistor of the same value and case is a completely different component — one percent tolerance and a coefficient several times worse. In a divider feeding an ADC reference, that difference shows up as gain error that drifts with temperature, and it cannot be calibrated out once.

Tantalum notes

The TMCM parts are molded tantalum chip capacitors, with the code carrying value in picofarads with a multiplier field, voltage and tolerance. The 293D series is the conformally coated axial-to-SMD family, and its longer code carries case, value, voltage, and a surge-test option. As with every solid tantalum, keep the working voltage well below the rating and avoid low-impedance inrush without a series resistance.
