Reading an OSRAM LED code
The first letter is the product class — L for LED — and the second identifies the colour: W for white, B for blue, A for amber, Y for yellow, G for green. The following characters identify the package and chip generation, and the numbers after that carry the electrical class. Two parts that differ only in the middle characters can share a footprint and differ in viewing angle, luminous flux or thermal resistance, so the code is the specification.
What the binning suffix actually controls
A string such as R2S1-3-0-20-R33 is a bin selection, not a packaging option. Each group selects a luminous flux bin, a colour or chromaticity bin, a forward-voltage bin and often a viewing-angle or thermal grouping. In a display or a backlight, mixing bins produces visible patches and colour shift across the panel even when every LED is within its own specification. In a single-indicator design the bins rarely matter. Where a board was designed around a specific binned part, ordering the base model without the suffix is the reason a replacement lot looks different.
Automotive and thermal notes
- Automotive-grade parts are qualified and binned more tightly; they are not interchangeable with commercial parts of the same colour.
- These packages are thermally limited by the pad, not the die — the board's copper area sets the usable drive current.
