Why the revision letter matters more than the model

BCM56850A0, A1 and A2 are the same product family but not the same device. Revision changes silicon errata and, in some cases, the package ball-out; a board qualified against one revision may not accept another. When you are repairing network equipment, the revision printed on the device is the only thing that identifies what was actually fitted.

Substitution pitfalls

Beyond the revision letter, these devices are large BGAs with fine pitch and a thermal pad; rework requires proper preheating and a reballing profile, and a poorly reflowed part will pass a continuity check and fail under load. If the original device is being replaced because of a failure, confirm whether the fault was thermal before fitting a new part into the same enclosure.
