Why the mating family is the specification
Molex numbers are series-based, and the series defines the mating interface: pitch, polarisation keying, latch style and current rating. Two connectors with the same pin count from different series will generally not mate, and forcing them damages the terminal rather than the housing. The second trap is stack height: a board-to-board pair is only defined as a pair, and a header from one family with a receptacle from another will either not seat or will seat at the wrong height and stress the solder joints. When replacing a connector, the safe reference is the full part number of the mated half, not just the count.
Assembly and sourcing notes
- Trailing digits encode circuit count and plating; a -0610 on the 53047 series is a six-circuit part.
- Crimp terminals and housings are separate orderable parts — a housing alone will not build a cable.
- Fine-pitch SMT connectors need stencil aperture control; tombstoning on 1.25 mm pitch parts is usually a paste-volume problem.

Substitution pitfalls
Pin count is the least useful thing to match. The series, the keying and the latch decide mating, and the plating decides whether the contact survives a humid cabinet. Where a connector is being replaced after field failure, inspect the mating half for fretting corrosion before fitting a new one.
