Reading a TAJ code

TAJB226K016RNJ decomposes cleanly: TAJ is the series, B is the case size, 226 is 22 microfarads (22 followed by six zeros, in picofarads), K is plus or minus ten percent, 016 is 16 volts, and RNJ is the packaging and plating suffix. Change the case letter and you change the footprint and the volumetric efficiency at the same time, so a B-case part and a D-case part with the same value are not interchangeable on an existing board.

The derating rule that matters

Solid tantalum capacitors should not be run near their rated voltage. The long-standing design practice is to keep the steady-state working voltage at or below half the rating, and lower still on low-impedance rails where inrush is high. A 16 V part on a 12 V rail is inside its rating but outside that practice, and it is the classic failure mode: a short develops, the part heats, and the result is a burned board rather than a degraded capacitor. Where the rail is close to the rating, a polymer or ceramic alternative deserves consideration.
