Reading a Samtec part number
QTH-020-05-L-D-DP-A is one of the most structured part numbers in the industry. QTH is the series — a high-speed terminal header. 020 is the position count per row, so this is a 20 by 2 array. 05 is the lead style, which sets the mating height and the tail length. L is the plating, light gold over nickel. D is the row configuration, double. DP marks the differential-pair footprint. A is the alignment pin option, and K adds a pick-and-place pad for automated assembly.
Stack height is a property of the pair
The lead style on the header and the mating option on the socket together define the board-to-board distance. A QTH-020-05 will not produce the same spacing as a QTH-020-01, and pairing the wrong combination either bottoms out before the contacts engage or leaves the pair mechanically unstable and stresses every solder joint. When replacing half of a pair, quote the code from the other half and the required stack height, not just the position count.
Plating and assembly
- Plating options are not cosmetic: L, G and H denote different gold thicknesses, and the choice affects mating cycles and contact resistance.
