Reading a KEMET ceramic code

C0603C561J5GACAUTO is a well-structured string. C is the ceramic series, 0603 is the case, the second C marks a standard commercial construction, 561 is 560 picofarads (56 followed by one zero), J is plus or minus five percent, 5 is the voltage code where 5 means 50 volts and 4 means 16 volts, and G is the dielectric — C0G in this case. The dielectric letter is the one worth slowing down for: G is C0G, R is X7R, and the letter after it in some codes marks a higher-temperature formulation. ACAUTO at the end is not decoration; it is the AEC-Q200 automotive qualification.

Why ACAUTO matters

A commercial and an automotive part of the same value, case and dielectric are not the same component. The automotive version carries the qualification record, tighter process control and, in many cases, a different internal construction to survive thermal cycling and board flex. Using a commercial part on an automotive line is a compliance failure even if the board works on the bench. The reverse direction is safe electrically and simply costs more.

Tantalum notes

T491X108K006AT is the KEMET tantalum series: X is the case size, 108 is 1000 microfarads (10 followed by eight zeros in picofarads), 006 is 6.3 volts and K is plus or minus ten percent. The same voltage-derating discipline applies as with any solid tantalum: keep the working voltage well below the rating and watch inrush current on low-impedance rails.
