Why DRAM and NAND are worth keeping
When a set-top box or an industrial PC fails to boot, the memory is often the cause and the board is otherwise sound. Replacement depends on matching density, organisation and speed grade exactly — a DDR3 part with the wrong organisation will not train at all, and a NAND device with a different page size will not accept the existing image.

- The suffix after the dash carries speed grade and revision; K4B2G1646Q and K4B2G1646F are different dies.
- For NAND, confirm page size and interface before ordering — these parts are not interchangeable across generations.

Substitution pitfalls
DDR3 and DDR4 share a package style but nothing else — voltage, signalling and training sequence all differ, and the wrong part simply will not initialise. Within DDR3, organisation and speed grade have to match the memory controller's configuration. For NAND, page size and interface mode are the discriminators; a device one generation newer will often fit the socket and still be unreadable to the existing firmware.
