What the prefixes mean
Qualcomm's prefixes describe the role of the die, not a product family. MSM marks a mobile station modem — a processor with the baseband integrated. MDM marks a standalone modem designed to be paired with a host processor. QSC marks a single-chip baseband. PM devices are the companion power management ICs, and RTR is the RF transceiver. This matters because they are designed as sets: an MSM8974 board expects a PM8018-class companion and an RTR8600-class transceiver, and swapping one member of the set for a neighbouring part number produces a board that powers up but never completes a network attach.
Reading the long suffix
Strings such as PM-8015-0-136NSP-MT-00-0 are Qualcomm internal identifiers: die revision, package code, temperature class and a final revision digit. Two codes that differ only in the last group are different revisions, and firmware written for one will often refuse to boot on the other. That is the single most common reason a replacement part appears dead. Always quote the complete code from the package, including the trailing groups.
