Why the 88E parts are still ordered
The 88E1111 is one of the longest-lived gigabit PHYs in industrial and networking designs. Its configuration comes from strapping pins sampled at reset rather than from a configuration memory, which means the surrounding resistors decide the interface mode — RGMII, SGMII or GMII — and the PHY address. A replacement part in the same package boots into the wrong mode if those straps expect a different default, and the symptom is a link that trains at the wrong speed or not at all. That is a board-level issue, not a defective chip, and it is worth checking the strapping before replacing the device.
Application processors
The 88AP series are ARM-based systems on chip used in printers, e-readers and industrial displays. They carry the memory controller, display pipeline and the interface glue for the product they were designed into, and their boot code lives in the product firmware. Two devices with adjacent model numbers can have different memory maps, so the full code from the package top is the only reliable reference when replacing one on an existing mainboard.
