Reading the code
The prefix is the function: CI is a multilayer ceramic chip inductor, FI is a ferrite bead. The next block is the case size in metric notation — 1608 means 1.6 by 0.8 mm, which is the imperial 0603; 2012 means 2.0 by 1.2 mm, imperial 0805; 1005 is imperial 0402. The three characters after that are the value, and this is where the two families part company: on a CI part they are inductance in nanohenry, on an FI part they are impedance in ohms at 100 MHz. FI-B1608-102 is therefore a 1 kΩ bead, not a 1 µH inductor. The tolerance letter — J for plus or minus five percent, K for plus or minus ten — and the T for taped packaging follow.
The mistake this family invites
Because the numbers look interchangeable, CI and FI parts get swapped, and the result is a filter that either does nothing or rings. A bead is specified by impedance versus frequency, DC resistance and rated current; substituting a chip inductor of the same nominal value removes the lossy element that was absorbing the noise. At the top of the range, the nH-value parts behave differently again: 10 nH and 39 nH parts are specified with an absolute tolerance and have a self-resonant frequency only a few hundred megahertz away, so the working frequency band, not just the value, decides the part.
Ordering notes
- State whether the position needs an inductor or a bead — the value string alone is ambiguous.
- For nH values, quote the self-resonant frequency requirement if the circuit runs above 1 GHz.
