Decoding a PIC part number

The suffix after the slash is where most ordering mistakes happen. In PIC16F1827T-I/SS, the T means tape and reel, I is the industrial temperature range, and SS is the SSOP package. The same silicon in a different package is a different orderable part, and the tape flag changes nothing electrically but everything to a pick-and-place line. For the EEPROM family, the letters before the number set the supply range: 24AA parts are specified down to 1.8 V, 24LC parts to 2.5 V, and 24FC parts are the 1 MHz fast-mode variants. Running a 24LC device at 1.8 V is outside its specification even though the package and pinout are identical.

Development notes

• 8-bit PIC devices are programmed through ICSP; the header must be designed into the board, not added later.
• Unique-ID EEPROM parts are factory-programmed and cannot be reordered with the same identifiers.

Substitution pitfalls

PIC16F73 and PIC16F1827 share a package but not a register map; code compiled for one will not run on the other. Among the EEPROMs, the UID variants carry a factory-programmed identifier that cannot be reproduced, so they are never a drop-in for a plain 24AA part.
